Enigmatic singer/songwriter Donn T defies categorization – playing and recording in a diverse range of styles from house and trip hop, to acoustic soul and pop. She first made an impact with 2010’s critically acclaimed and aptly titled Kaleidoscopic. Over the years, she has shared the stage with and opened for a diverse array of artists such as Marsha Ambrosius, Little Dragon, Alice Smith, Patrick Stump (Fall Out Boy), Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears, John Legend, Nelly Furtado, Amy Winehouse, and Zap Mama. She’s also had songs placed on television and in movies including the Showtime crime drama Street Time, UPN’s series Kevin Hill, BET’s feature film I Will Follow (by 2015 Golden Globe nominated director Ava Duvernay “Selma”), and in commercials for the wireless audio product Sonos.Reviews:
Donn T’s latest endeavor is her sophomore effort Flight of the Donn T. The lead single, “Midnight,” has received rave reviews from the likes of Okayplayer & Singersroom, and is featured in the 2015 Lifetime movie With This Ring (co-starring Jill Scott, Even & Regina Hall.) All of this activity comes under the umbrella of D-Tone Victorious, Donn T’s newly created label. When asked why she underwent the arduous task of starting her own label, Donn T simply says, “Necessity is the mother of invention.”
On Flight of the Donn T, she and guitarist/producer/husband Jake Morelli are responsible for the lion’s share of writing and production. They share additional writing credit with Mike McHenry (Black Eyed Peas, Kelis, Rihanna), Raymond Angry (Christina Aguilera, Mick Jagger, Esperanza Spalding), Philly DJ Danophonic, and Steve McKie (Bilal, Jill Scott). Donn T states that all of this new music tells a story, which is why she’s spent the past few years fine-tuning and perfecting (as opposed to Kaleidoscopic, which took a week to create, record, and master.) “These songs encompass the emotions I had about taking flight, about launching something new.”
Steering innovation, Donn t, is the quintessential independent artist and do-it-yourselfer. The Philadelphia native comes from a storied musical lineage. Her grandfather was Beachy Thompson of the pioneering gospel group The Dixie Hummingbirds. Her father is Lee Andrews, leader of legendary doo-wop group Lee Andrews & The Hearts. He was also in the soul group Congress Alley, along with Donn T’s mother, Jacqui. Donn T’s brother, Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson, is a Grammy-winning musician and bandleader of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Family ties notwithstanding, Donn T is a unique talent in her own right.
